The finished surface is only part of the story. The structural core, adhesives, coatings and protective finishes all matter when choosing furniture made with more thoughtfully selected materials.

What Does “Non-Toxic Furniture” Actually Mean?

“Non-toxic furniture” is a common search term, but there is no single material or standard that automatically makes an entire piece of furniture non-toxic.

A more useful approach is to understand what the furniture is made from, what is used to hold it together and what is applied to its surface.

When comparing furniture, consider:

  • The structural material
  • Composite wood and plywood
  • Adhesives
  • Paints, stains and coatings
  • Protective sealers
  • Upholstery materials, where applicable
  • Available information about chemical emissions

Specific material information tells you far more than a broad “green” or “non-toxic” label.

What Do We Mean by Healthier Furniture?

For us, healthier furniture means making more thoughtful material choices wherever practical.

That can include:

  • No-added-formaldehyde wood products
  • Lower-emission materials
  • Low-VOC finishes where applicable
  • Carefully selected adhesives and coatings
  • Clear information about what goes into the furniture

It does not mean claiming that an entire piece contains absolutely no chemicals or emissions.

The goal is to make informed choices and reduce unnecessary exposure where better alternatives are available.

Why Do Furniture Materials Matter?

A finished table or shelf may look simple from the outside, but several different materials can be involved in its construction.

Furniture may contain:

  • Solid wood
  • Plywood
  • MDF
  • Particleboard
  • Adhesives
  • Decorative finishes
  • Sealers and protective coatings

The visible surface is therefore only one part of the complete material system.

Understanding what is underneath it gives you a better picture of what you are actually bringing into your home.

What Are VOCs?

VOC stands for volatile organic compound.

VOCs are a broad group of chemicals that can be released into indoor air from many household products and building materials.

Furniture-related sources may include:

  • Paints
  • Varnishes
  • Lacquers
  • Adhesives
  • Coatings
  • Certain composite wood products
  • Some upholstery materials

Not every product emits the same VOCs or the same amount.

That is why specific product information is more useful than simply asking whether something “contains VOCs.”

What Is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a volatile organic compound that can be released from a variety of materials and household products.

In furniture, one area worth paying attention to is composite wood.

Depending on how they are manufactured, products such as:

  • MDF
  • Particleboard
  • Hardwood plywood
  • Laminated wood products

can contain adhesives or resins associated with formaldehyde emissions.

However, not every composite wood product is made the same way.

Adhesive technology, manufacturing methods and emission levels can vary significantly between products.

Is All Plywood the Same?

No.

Plywood is a broad category of engineered wood, and different products can use different:

  • Wood species
  • Veneers
  • Core constructions
  • Adhesive systems
  • Manufacturing processes

Instead of simply asking whether furniture contains plywood, it is more useful to ask what kind of plywood is being used and how it is manufactured.

What Does “No Added Formaldehyde” Mean?

No Added Formaldehyde, often shortened to NAF, refers to products manufactured without adding formaldehyde-based resins to the relevant adhesive system.

This is different from saying a product contains absolutely zero formaldehyde.

Wood can naturally contain very small amounts of formaldehyde, which is why “no added formaldehyde” is a more precise description when discussing how a wood panel is manufactured.

What Is PureBond® Plywood?

Where plywood is required in our furniture construction, we use PureBond® hardwood plywood rather than conventional MDF.

PureBond® is manufactured using a no-added-formaldehyde adhesive technology.

For us, the material hidden underneath the finished surface matters just as much as the material you can see.

The structural core is not simply something used to fill the inside of a piece. It is part of the overall material decision.

Is MDF Automatically Unhealthy?

It is more useful to evaluate a specific product than to label every material within an entire category as healthy or unhealthy.

Different MDF products can use different adhesive technologies and meet different formaldehyde-emission requirements.

Instead of asking only:

“Does this furniture contain MDF?”

consider asking:

  • What emission standard does the material meet?
  • What adhesive system is used?
  • Is testing or documentation available?
  • Is a lower-emission alternative available?

The same principle applies to plywood, particleboard and other engineered wood products.

What Should I Know About Furniture Finishes?

The structural material is only part of the furniture.

A finished piece may also include:

  • Paint
  • Stain
  • Lacquer
  • Varnish
  • Adhesives
  • Decorative coatings
  • Protective sealers

These products can have very different formulations and emission profiles.

When possible, look for clear information about the actual finishing products being used.

Terms such as low-VOC, lower-emission or water-based can be useful, but they should refer to a specific product or finishing system rather than being treated as a blanket description of the entire piece.

Does Water-Based Mean VOC-Free?

No.

A water-based product is not automatically VOC-free.

“Water-based” describes an important part of the formulation, but a water-based coating or adhesive can still contain VOCs or other ingredients.

Similarly:

  • Low-VOC does not necessarily mean zero VOC
  • Zero-VOC does not necessarily mean zero emissions of every substance
  • One low-VOC component does not automatically make the entire piece low-emission

Specific claims are more useful than broad assumptions.

What Does Low-VOC Mean?

Low-VOC generally means that a product contains a lower level of volatile organic compounds compared with applicable limits or conventional alternatives.

It can be a useful factor when choosing:

  • Paints
  • Sealers
  • Adhesives
  • Coatings
  • Finishing products

However, VOC content is only one part of the material picture.

A thoughtful furniture system considers the combination of materials used throughout the piece.

What Is GREENGUARD Certification?

GREENGUARD certification is focused on chemical emissions from products used indoors.

Products carrying the certification have been evaluated against established chemical-emission criteria.

GREENGUARD Gold uses more stringent criteria intended for environments where greater sensitivity to indoor air quality may be a consideration.

Third-party certifications can be useful because they provide more specific information than vague terms such as “eco-friendly” or “green.”

What Should I Look for in Composite Wood Furniture?

If furniture contains plywood, MDF, particleboard or another composite wood product, look for specific information about the material.

Useful questions include:

  • Does it meet applicable formaldehyde-emission requirements?
  • Does it use no-added-formaldehyde adhesive technology?
  • Is the panel manufacturer identified?
  • Is testing or certification information available?
  • What finishing products are applied over it?

Compliance with established emission limits provides a baseline, while some manufacturers choose materials designed to go beyond minimum requirements.

Is Solid Wood Always the Healthiest Choice?

Not automatically.

Solid wood can be an excellent furniture material, but you should still consider the complete finished product.

Solid wood furniture may also contain:

  • Adhesives
  • Fillers
  • Stains
  • Paint
  • Lacquers
  • Sealers
  • Other coatings

At the same time, some engineered wood products use carefully developed adhesive systems designed to reduce certain emissions.

The better question is not simply:

“Is it solid wood?”

It is:

“What is the complete material system?”

Does “Natural” Automatically Mean Healthier?

No.

“Natural” describes the origin of a material more than it describes its complete chemical or emission profile.

Likewise, something being manufactured does not automatically make it harmful.

Be cautious when furniture is described only with broad words such as:

  • Natural
  • Green
  • Eco
  • Clean
  • Sustainable
  • Non-toxic

Instead, look for an explanation of what those claims actually mean for that particular product.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Buying Furniture?

You do not need to understand every ingredient used in furniture manufacturing.

A few practical questions can tell you a lot:

  • What is the furniture actually made from?
  • What is used for the structural core?
  • Is MDF or particleboard used?
  • What type of plywood is used?
  • Are no-added-formaldehyde materials used?
  • What adhesives are used?
  • What coatings and sealers are applied?
  • Are any finishes low-VOC or lower-emission?
  • Are recognized certifications or test results available?
  • Can the manufacturer clearly explain its material choices?

Transparency is often one of the simplest indicators of a thoughtful approach.

Rather than relying on broad claims such as “non-toxic,” we prefer to be specific about the material choices we make and why we make them.

Because what is underneath the surface matters too.

What is it made from?

What is holding it together?

What is applied to the surface?

What information does the manufacturer provide about those materials?

The clearer the answers are, the easier it becomes to make a more informed choice for your home.
